Since I could hold a pencil, I've been writing fantasy. While the escapism of the genre is appealing in its own right, I've found that the larger-than-life elements of fantasy are excellent tools to portray the real experiences and issues we all face in a way that feels as important as they really are. The wonder, the danger, the mythical, and the ordinary—they are all necessary components of the human experience.
Currently, I work as an Associate Editor for the Arcanist, a fantasy publisher specialized in exciting, bloody, and character driven stories. When I'm not editing or writing, I'm often designing TTRPGs that I'm too stubborn to call finished or I'm out fulfilling my Midwestern wanderlust.
In the present day, we are witnessing a new wave of artists from other mediums, who incorporate writing in order to enhance their work. We live in an age of comic artists and animated series and OC culture, where creatives are encouraged to build a connected world of stories beneath the surface of their art. Today, more people than ever before are writing—I am proud to say that.
And so it is all the more tragic that today, more people than ever before are giving up on writing.
Without a strong foundation of knowledge, writing feels like pulling on a slot machine. When you write well, you have no idea how to replicate it; when you write poorly, you have no idea how to recover from it. It is exhausting, demoralizing work, and no amount of character archetypes or plot templates will leave you feeling anymore prepared.
Rather than delving into the nuances of what makes a work publishable, my mission is to help you become the best writer you can be. As I edit your manuscript, I take the time to learn about you as a writer, and figure out what tools you need to help master your craft. The revisions you'll receive come with observations about your style and how you can improve; not only do they help your current story, they make you a better writer.
Today, more people than ever before are writing. So let's make it easy.
